EXCHANGE QUAY WINS THREE GREEN APPLE AWARDS
Manchester office campus wins recognition for introducing EV Charging Pods
Exchange Quay, Manchester’s flagship office campus, has won three Green Apple Environment awards this year for the installation of a series of electrical vehicle (EV) charging pods, designed to prepare the building and its occupiers for the future, as well as support a more sustainable way to travel. The EV pods were built and installed by Manchester-based The Pilot Group.
The Green Apple Environment Awards took place at the Houses of Parliament, Palace of Westminster in London. The awards, first established in 1994, recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. Exchange Quay were recipients of a Gold Award for Property Management (in top 3 of this category); Bronze Award for Carbon Reduction and Bronze Award for Pollution Control.
Following the government initiative to stop the production of petrol and diesel cars from 2030, the project at Exchange Quay initiated in 2020 was to provide an electrical infrastructure for 10 EV charging pods within the firm’s multi storey car park, with a view to installing a further 10 in 2021 to help an increase in customers converting to electrical cars.
The EV charging pods were installed within the ground floor of the visitor parking bays to maximise use of these bays for occupiers and visitors alike. The pods offer customers the benefit of charging their cars in a sheltered and secure place whilst they work.
In addition to future proofing the car park, the new scheme has received an influx of positive feedback, encouraging occupiers to reduce their CO2 emissions and persuading current occupiers to introduce a salary sacrifice scheme to inspire employees to make the switch to electrical vehicles.
The firm chose to install the Plus version charging pods which offer a more user-friendly display and provide access to two charging connectors, resulting in less infrastructure needed to install the charging points as one unit can power two bays at the same time.
Les Lang, Director, Till AM commented:
“Our vision behind the installation of the EV pods was to be ahead of the curve with economical changes and mindset of ‘going green’. By installing the charging pods, we have helped Exchange Quay customers purchasing electric cars who may not have been able to without this resource, creating a safer and cleaner environment for future generations.”
“We believe that the introduction of our EV charging pods will not only assist, but encourage our customers and clients to make a ‘greener’ choice when choosing their next car. Our clients are now receiving numerous enquiries from potential tenants that they would like to lease bays with EV charging capabilities which is something we will investigate moving forwards.”
